O Come, O Come Emmanuel
For Christmas 2023, I filmed myself writing and illuminating seven timeless Christmas carols, and synced the footage to my own recorded music.
First up was John Mason Neale’s classic translation Victorian translation of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” rendered in classic Gothic Textualis calligraphy with Lombardic capital letters.
The O Antiphons
Did you know? “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” is based on thousand year old series of hymns called the “O Antiphons.”
So naturally, I found the oldest extant manuscript of the O Antiphons, and copied it for myself! In authentic Carolingian calligraphy with gold initials, of course.
Good Christian Friends, Rejoice!
Another visit with our good friend John Mason Neale, to write, decorate, and sing his carol “Good Christian Friends Rejoice” (aka “Good Christian Men Rejoice”), once again rendered in Gothic Textualis calligraphy.

In the Bleak Midwinter
A more somber selection. The classic poem by Christina Rossetti, rendered in Gothic Cursive with intial letters of austere (yet elegant) gold and silver filigree.
O Come, All Ye Faithful
Jumping back to the 18th Century, here we have “O Come All Ye Faithful” in Gothic Textualis calligraphy, with initial letters of Finetec gold and lapis lazuli!
We Three Kings of Orient Are
And to round out the Holiday season, here’s my rendering of the Ephiphany carol “We Three Kings,” in Gothic Textualis calligraphy with festive red, green, and gold initials.
